What Happens When We Ignore Genuine Mental Illness?

In a chilling case in Cheshire, England, a mother hid her malnourished baby in a drawer for three years, feeding her only through a syringe. This disturbing act has led many to ask: have we lost sight of true mental illness in society today? With celebrities frequently sharing their struggles with anxiety or depression, are we overlooking more severe cases that might not fit neatly into the conversation about mental health?

The Case of the Hidden Child

This tragic incident came to light when the mother’s partner, hearing noises from the bedroom, stumbled upon the hidden child. The baby girl, who had spent years in an underbed drawer, was suffering from severe malnutrition, dehydration, and a cleft palate. She had never received medical care, nor had she been registered with any authorities, despite being born in 2020.

The mother, who had other children, revealed during questioning that she gave birth alone in her bathtub. She kept the birth a secret from her partner, as they were in an abusive relationship. The child had been locked away for most of her life, never integrated into the family, and kept in isolation.

The mother claimed she was unaware of her pregnancy and was “really scared” of childbirth. Yet, the lack of any medical intervention or concern for the child’s welfare raises serious questions about her mental state. The most unsettling part of the case was the testimony of a caregiver, who said the three-year-old, once recovered, had to be taught to smile and didn’t know what food was.

The Court’s Response

In response to the horrifying actions, the mother’s defence suggested that a combination of poor mental health, an abusive relationship, and the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown had created an “exceptional set of circumstances.” Nonetheless, the court sentenced her to seven-and-a-half years in prison.

Under the UK’s Mental Health Act of 1983, if a defendant is found to have a mental disorder at the time of the crime, they can be sent to a psychiatric hospital instead of prison. However, the court chose not to take this route. Instead, it deemed the woman capable of understanding the nature of her actions, despite the extraordinary cruelty involved. This decision raises significant questions about how we recognise and address genuine mental illness in the justice system.

Mental Illness and Social Conditions

This case is not an isolated incident. Similar stories of child abuse and neglect are sadly all too common. In Austria in 2008, Josef Fritzl kept his daughter Elisabeth locked in a cellar for over 20 years, fathering seven children with her. In 2018, David and Louise Turpin were sentenced to life in prison after they were exposed for abusing their 13 children. More recently, in 2021, a severely malnourished teenager was found locked away by her parents in Australia.

Each of these cases reflects deep societal issues, including domestic abuse, coercive control, and the failure of support systems. Mental illness often stems from such environments, where trauma and dysfunction lead to distorted thinking and behaviour. However, the way mental illness manifests is not always obvious or straightforward. What Happens When We Ignore Genuine Mental Illness?

A Growing Concern

Mental health issues are widespread, with over one in five American adults affected by some form of mental illness. For young adults aged 18-25, the rates are even higher, approaching 34%. Celebrities like Justin Bieber, Simone Biles, and Naomi Osaka have spoken openly about their mental health struggles, bringing attention to the issue. While their stories are important, it is crucial to recognise that not all mental health issues are the same.

For some, mental illness may present as anxiety or depression. For others, it can manifest in more severe and destructive ways, such as the case in Cheshire. The challenge lies in distinguishing between different types of mental health issues and addressing them appropriately. Mental illness can often coexist with rational thinking: even individuals who commit extreme acts of violence against children often do so with a degree of planning and manipulation. This doesn’t mean they are mentally well—it highlights the complex nature of mental health disorders.

Rethinking Mental Health and Justice

When we discuss “mental health issues,” it’s essential to recognise that the term encompasses a vast array of conditions, each requiring a different response. Some cases may involve conditions that cloud one’s ability to understand the consequences of their actions. Others, like the woman in Cheshire, may involve individuals who appear to have a clear understanding of their actions, but whose behaviour is shaped by mental health issues that have not been adequately recognised or treated.

In this particular case, the court’s decision to imprison the mother rather than address her mental health needs suggests that we still have a long way to go in understanding and dealing with the complexities of mental illness. By failing to properly address her mental health, we may be missing the opportunity for rehabilitation and recovery.

The Need for a Balanced Approach

The case in Cheshire is a heartbreaking reminder of the potential consequences when genuine mental illness is overlooked or misunderstood. While celebrities speaking out about their mental health struggles can help raise awareness, it’s equally important that we recognise and respond to more severe cases of mental illness that may not fit within the typical narrative. Only by doing so can we begin to address the root causes of such extreme behaviour and provide individuals with the support and care they need.

As we move forward, it is crucial that society, the justice system, and healthcare professionals work together to ensure that mental health issues are taken seriously and addressed with the appropriate level of care and compassion.
