Philippines Vice President Sara Duterte Faces Impeachment, Deepening Political Unrest
JoSS – The political climate in the Philippines has taken a dramatic turn as Vice President Sara Duterte was impeached by lawmakers on Wednesday, heightening tensions in the country. Duterte, who has long been a controversial figure, faces serious allegations that could undermine her political future and escalate an ongoing feud between two of the country’s most powerful political families.
The impeachment stems from four complaints accusing Duterte of misusing millions of public funds and making alarming statements about plotting the assassination of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., his wife, and the Speaker of the House, who is Marcos’s cousin. These allegations have stirred deep concerns about the integrity of Duterte’s leadership.
Just over three years ago, Duterte and Marcos, both heirs to notorious political dynasties, ran together in the 2022 national election. Their alliance, aimed at fostering national unity, resulted in a landslide victory. However, their partnership has since deteriorated, with Duterte and Marcos showing clear signs of political divergence.

Duterte has firmly denied the accusations of corruption, describing the impeachment as politically motivated. This sentiment is shared by many Filipinos, who see the move as an effort to prevent her from pursuing her ambition to succeed Marcos as president. Marcos, for his part, has denied involvement in the impeachment proceedings, despite the growing concerns about his influence over the situation.
Aries Arugay, a political science expert at the University of the Philippines, commented, “This is dragging the whole country into political chaos. Unlike in the U.S., she has no critical function here as vice president. The political motivation is clear: to stop the eventuality of a Sara Duterte presidency.”
Duterte has openly expressed her desire to run for president after Marcos’s term ends in 2028. However, her political future is now uncertain, as the impeachment process proceeds.
The Duterte and Marcos families have been at odds over key foreign policy decisions, particularly regarding the Philippines’ relationship with the United States and China. While former President Rodrigo Duterte, Sara’s father, sought closer ties with China, Marcos has been more inclined to strengthen the country’s relationship with the U.S.
The impeachment process has further deepened the divide between the two powerful families. Paolo Duterte, a congressman and Sara Duterte’s younger brother, voiced his outrage, calling the impeachment “desperate and politically motivated.” He warned the Marcos administration that attempting to push through the impeachment without consequences would be a grave mistake.
The impeachment vote passed with 215 out of 306 members of the House of Representatives in favor of removing Duterte from office. This has set the stage for a trial in the Senate, scheduled for June when Congress reconvenes. A two-thirds majority vote in the Senate is required for a conviction, but analysts believe that the pro-Duterte composition of the Senate makes it unlikely she will be convicted.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the outcome, a conviction would mean Duterte’s removal from office, disqualification from holding any future public office, and potential criminal and civil charges. This could mark the end of her political career.
As the political drama unfolds, many Filipinos have expressed frustration with the ongoing power struggles between the Marcoses and the Dutertes. With pressing issues such as poverty and unemployment plaguing the country, public discontent has been growing, and approval ratings for both Marcos and Duterte have recently declined.
The impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte has become a focal point of political unrest, further fueling the divide in the Philippines and leaving the nation’s leadership facing increased scrutiny at a time when unity is needed most.
